The driveway at The Oaks.
Today I'm starting at Heathcote-Nagambie Road, State Route 344. It might not be state route, but the number is 344.Â
As we are talking numbers, we will then drive 68 meters into the bush to get to the front door of The Oaks. That’s what Matt's dad Jeff told me: the houses are not numbered in an ordered sequence with evens and odds on either side of the road. Numbers are given out based upon the distance they are from the main road.
Now that's something I never knew or would ever have found out normally. Who knows that stuff?Â
One other thing I don't know is how to get the garbage man to collect the garbage bin on my side of the road, or how to drive a tractor.
I have been here since July or August ‘22, so I’ve probably driven in and out, what, 50 times now.
I have not walked it or run it yet, or ever perhaps, as i’m not getting any younger and the back is not what it used to be.Â
Given that this is Ã…rt with Simon, I bring you the idea of changing your perspective. Of stopping somewhere you normally wouldn't, of turning the way the wheel leads you.Â
Getting out instead, and looking.Â
Most times the driveway is the path you take to leave your house to get to where you're going. Today we're just driving the driveway and answering some of the questions that we often hear.Â
It does lead to some rather unexpected and rewarding experiences.
You are reading the first newsletter from Art with Simon, sent by Melbourne artist Simon Macaulay in the year he turns 50.
Art with Simon tells stories of Macaulay’s daily life; the big, weird and small moments from his journey up until now and gives a behind-the-scenes view of everything he’s creating today.
